What are the annual contribution limits for 529 plans?

  • $15K per individual ($30K for married couples) – meaning if you have three grandchildren (or children, or any other beneficiary) you and your spouse can jointly give $90K per year ($30K to each child) without exceeding the annual gift tax exclusion.
  • Or individuals may elect to give $75K at once, instead of spreading their contributions over a 5-year period, which is known as "super-funding" a 529 account.
